CATALYZING SOCIETY-WIDE CLIMATE ACTION
WHAT WE DO
We are a group of organizations, institutions, and experts working to accelerate just, efficient, all-of-society action towards a climate-safe future. We work on:
education
We teach all ages about climate science and solutions. We work on K-12, university, informal, and community learning, local knowledge and traditional ways of knowing.
Training
We prepare the workforce of the future, upskill today's workers, prepare new careers, and ensure that all people are equipped with the skills they need to act on climate solutions.
public awareness
We ensure that all people across the country are aware of climate change, what can be done about it, and ways to get involved.
access to information
We ensure that the public, policymakers, and businesses have access to high-quality, usable, local climate information.
public participation
We empower youth and the public to get involved in decision making and encourage leaders to take community input. We advocate for civil rights, public comment, and community consent processes.
international collaboration
We work with partners around the country and around the globe to support each other and share best practices. We advocate at the international level for a just, robust implementation of ACE principles.
Climate justice
We work to build equitable systems and programs with communities already overburdened by climate change and environmental degradation. We ensure that our work addresses and does not exacerbate existing inequalities around race, income, gender and sexuality, age, and others.
What is ACE?
"The overarching goal of ACE is to empower all members of society to engage in climate action, through education, training, public awareness, public participation, public access to information, and international cooperation on these issues." -UNFCCC
Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE) is described in Article 6 of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and Article 12 of the Paris Agreement.
ACE recognizes the transformational power of education, training, public awareness, public participation, public access to information, and international cooperation working in coordination. By breaking traditional silos between academia, the workforce, community organizing, youth, science, and communications, an ACE strategy can reach all of society in ways that are relevant to them, empowering them to take just, effective, community-based action to address the climate crisis.
ACE, in its UN definition, includes special focus on youth and a sensitivity to gender differences in the experience of and capacity to react to climate change. In our implementation in the U.S., we expanded this focus to include race, income, geography, and other dynamics that impact people in this country in relation to climate change.
